Curious....

Divorce Judge Orders Religious Woman's Kids Sent Back To Public School

This raises an interesting question here. As far as I can tell, this woman got involved in a religion that at first glance appears to be a cult. Her husband didn't like this new religion, and filed for a divorce, and asked that the kids be returned to public school, presumably in an attempt to help the children not be so heavily influenced by the mother's new religion.

Where do the rights fall here? Is this issue really about homeschooling or religion? Does the father/husband have any rights now in the lives of his children, or will the mother now have all the say over the children's futures?

There are a lot of issues here that could beg tons of questions in any given direction. I am a homeschooling mother, and wouldn't be very happy if I was told I couldn't do it anymore. If I were involved in a cult, I probably wouldn't realize it and would also be unhappy if I felt that my religion was being attacked. But does that make it right? Who gets to decide what is or isn't a cult? So many questions. Any thoughts?

Home Schooler's Fed Up Wish List

This is quite entertaining, if you have a few minutes, please watch. It's a nice look into the lives of home schoolers and the asinine comments people make when they find out what you're doing.

Why We Home School 8

8. Because even with the answers ahead of time, half the kids still failed.

7. Do you really want to have teachers that care more about their own agenda than your children, being the ones to educate them?

6. Why subject your children to religious indoctrination?

5. Would you want your child indoctrinated without your knowledge?

4. Who wouldn't want their child courted by a college because they were homeschooled?

3. Our children are less likely to have this happen.

2. Our children won't have to witness terrible crimes like this.

1. Our children are less likely to be sexually assaulted.

Re: Why We Home School

When I read this article about religious indoctrination, I felt I really had to do a full post to clarify my point. There are a few key phrases in this article that really stood out to me.

But the public schools are no place for religious indoctrination that promotes certain beliefs that not all the kids in the school share," Doug Hildebrand, a Presbyterian deacon who is among the plaintiffs, said in a written statement released by the ACLU.

Now, on the one hand, you have what is an elective Bible study, in a public school. On the other hand, you have people crying that you can't have religious indoctrination in a public school. And yet, this is what we see on a regular basis. The teaching of evolution, of sex ed to very young students, teachers showing Brokeback Mountain to underage students (another good reason to home school) and then telling them not to tell their parents, and yet an elective course in a book that has been around longer than anything; is respected and revered; taught in the home; and so on, and yet it cannot be allowed to be taught? What is going on here? When did the separation of church and state become about getting Christianity (and only Christianity) out of the public schools?

You can teach any religion BUT Christianity in a public school, and get away with it. And no one can say a thing against it.

THAT is just one more reason why we home school

Why We Homeschool 2

My husband and I made the decision to homeschool our children before we were even married.

In my ongoing list of reasons to homeschool, here is reason number 2.

Why We Homeschool

My husband and I chose, before we were married, to homeschool our then future children. It was a decision that did not come lightly, but we made it with the available facts that we had at the time. We knew that we could give our children a safer and probably better education than any of the schools in the city we lived in at the time.

There has been quite a bit of backlash towards us for our decision. People for some reason like to question my husband's mother about my ability to teach my own children. One woman even went so far as to ask if I was "smart" enough. (She also happened to be the wife of a school principle, no bias there).

I have finally decided to start making a running list of the reasons that we have chosen and still choose to homeschool. If you have any reasons that you have chosen to homeschool, just leave a comment. It may end up in a post!

So here is reason number one:

1. Our children are less likely to be sexually assaulted.

Here is the article that refreshed my memory. While it may not have been the first one we thought of, it is certainly one of the most important. I will periodically add more reasons as time goes on. This will probably end up being a very long list!
